Paths of travel to exits are provided to allow a well-organized means of egress from the building in the event of an emergency or crisis.
How do i maintain my fire doors?
Maintenance to the system ideally should be carried by a competent person who is performing this function on an ongoing routine inspection as to insure repeat breaches are identified and appropriate action is taken.
The maintenance checks should ensure that:
- No obstruction has occurred by stacking of goods or equipment within escape travel paths to allow for a free flowing exit path
- No unauthorised alternations to the travel paths including locks to doors, increased travel distances to exits, trip hazards etc.
Ensure that the exit door:
- is intact and operational
- is fitted with door furniture mounted between 900mm and 1200mm above floor level
- is capable of being opened by a single-handed downward action on a single device without the use of a key, from the direction which a person would seek egress
- if fitted with a fail-safe device which unlocks the door automatically when any sprinkler, smoke or heat detector system in the building is activated insure all functions are operating correctly.
